Wellness What? Wellness Who?
What is all this talk about Wellness?
It seems everywhere I turn, people are using this term “Wellness”. In fact, it also seems that more and more professionals have been converting their status to that of a “Wellness Professional”.
I’m sure you’ve heard the term “Wellness” before, but let me ask you…
Do you have a true definition of the word?
The other day someone asked me, What do you mean “Wellness”?… It turns out that they did not have a clear definition of what Wellness meant.
Interestingly enough… as I began to answer them, with my own version of the term, I quickly realized that “Wellness” actually means many different things depending on who you are talking too..
This immediately gave me the desire to want to broaden my scope of this term and see exactly how other people were defining it and how they were using it.
However, before we get into that, let me first give you my definition:
Wellness – The proactive Care of the Human Body - Encompassing the Mind – Body – Spirit and Emotions.
To me, it is a philosophy of proactive wellness care with an emphasis on lifestyle and personal responsibility.
After doing a bit of research on the subject, I came across a few other definitions for Wellness that I liked.
Here they are:
- A state of optimal health or optimal functioning.
- A type of preventive medicine associated with an individual’s lifestyle which, through a combination of exercise and diet, can reduce health care utilization and costs.
- A state of health more positive than the mere absence of disease, wellness programs emphasize self-responsibility for a lifestyle process that realizes the individual’s highest physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
- A healthy state of well-being free from disease.
- Disease prevention and health promotion activities that shifts focus from curing disease to promoting health.
- A dynamic state of physical, mental, and social well-being; a way of life which equips the individual to realize the full potential of his/her capabilities and to overcome and compensate for weaknesses; a lifestyle which recognizes the importance of nutrition, physical fitness, stress reduction, and self-responsibility. Wellness has been viewed as the result of four key factors over which an individual has varying degrees of control: human biology, environment, health care organization and lifestyle.
- The quality or state of being in good health. (Webster’s dictionary).
- Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence. (National Wellness Institute).
- Programs or benefits introduced to encourage fitness, preventive care and early detection of illness to help reduce the costs of future care (also known as preventive care).
- Emphasizes individual responsibility for well being through the practice of health-promoting life-style behaviors.
As you can see, by the definitions above, Wellness can be described many different ways, depending on how you want to use it.
Hopefully this helps and that you now have a broader understanding of what Wellness can mean for you in your life.
So what are you waiting for? Isn’t it time to implement some of that personal responsibility and begin doing some preventative health care maintenance?
